Exploding Beer Prices: A Comparative Study of European Capitals

The prices of some 1,500 beers brewed here have however experienced some inflation in recent months. From now on, it is almost impossible to get one for less than €2 in a café or restaurant.

Beer, ice cream, mussels, fries, waffles: these five star products of the summer whose price has exploded in 20 years

Dear ? This is nothing compared to the prices that can be found in other countries. To check it, Statista has analyzed the average prices of half beers (0.5l) sometimes sold in supermarkets sometimes even in cafes and restaurants. And this, in 18 European capitals.

With an observation: if the prices may seem high in Belgium, it is nothing compared to those practiced in other countries. “Depending on the city where you are, drinking a beer can be very cheap or weigh heavily on the wallet”, analyzes Statista.

Especially in northern Europe. Thus, the Top 5 of the most expensive capitals, in terms of beer, is monopolized by four northern cities, to which Geneva (Switzerland) is added.

Everything returns to normal: Belgian beer consumption returns to pre-Covid levels

In Reykjavik (Iceland), for example, the average price of beer in the supermarket (pils or special) amounts to almost €2.5 and goes up to €9.53 on average in front of cafés and restaurants. The Norwegian (Oslo), Swiss (Geneva), Finnish (Helsinki) and Copenhagen capitals follow.

Belgium, 10th out of 18, is in the soft underbelly of the ranking with average prices of €2.1 in supermarkets and €5 in cafés and restaurants.

Conversely, paradise for beer lovers seems to be in the Czech Republic, where beer does not exceed one euro on average in supermarkets and goes up to €2.31 in cafés or restaurants.

However, the study does not say anything regarding the quality of the beers sold. It’s hard to compare the price of a delicious Orval or a Paix Dieu on tap to that of a Czech “cat’s pee”.
