At the end of 2023, not a single car has been recorded on the Russian used car market that has not risen in price or at least retained the same price. As Otkritie Auto experts (the auto business unit of Otkritie Bank) note, the price increase, depending on the model, ranged from 8% to 26%, which is higher than the official inflation rate.

The most affordable AvtoVAZ model currently in production, Lada Granta, has changed the price more than others. Over the year, the car gained almost a quarter of a million, or 26%, and as a result its average price was 934.5 thousand rubles. The main reason for the increase is a serious increase in the price of new Lada Granta in official showrooms. Despite the fact that the factory’s recommended retail price suggests the possibility of purchasing this budget runabout for 699.9 thousand rubles, actual prices at dealerships often exceed 1 million rubles.

In the past, the most popular foreign car on the market – Renault Logan – began to cost 1.1 million rubles at the end of the year, 25% more than in 2022. Another Renault, the Duster crossover, has risen in price by 24%. The average price of this car on the secondary market is close to 2 million rubles.

In fourth and fifth places were two German business class cars. For the BMW 5 Series they started asking 5.57 million rubles (plus 23% for the year), for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class – 5.26 million rubles (plus 22%).

The BMW X5, Lada Vesta and two Hyundais (Solaris and Creta) also rose in price by more than 20% over the year. The BMW 3 Series, Kia (Rio and Sportage), Skoda Octavia, Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen Polo and three Toyota models (Camry, RAV-4 and LC 300) added from 11% to 18%. Interestingly, another Japanese all-terrain vehicle, the Toyota LC Prado, rose in price less than the others at the end of the year (by 8%). This happened due to the fact that in the fall supplies of this model from China increased, and therefore in December they began to offer it cheaper by almost 200 thousand rubles.

“It is almost impossible to predict exactly how popular models will rise in price in 2024 in the current conditions. There is no doubt that this process will not stop, since the secondary market will continue to attract those who cannot purchase a new car, the average price of which at the end of the year, according to aggregators, was close to 3.5 million rubles. At the same time, the saturation of the secondary market with liquid goods slowed down after a change in the state’s tax policy in auto retail in August last year,” explained Marina Dembitskaya, head of Otkritie Auto.
