Experts teach how not to overdo it with chocolate during Easter

There’s no shortage of delicacies to savor over the Easter break, but it’s possible to enjoy them without having to swallow the bad side of exaggeration. “The most bitter thing we can leave on the plate is guilt”, says nutritionist Thaílla Fontenele.

O metropolises spoke with a psychologist and two nutritionists to find out how to deal with the typical sweets of the time, and they are unanimous: we should not be afraid when celebrating the holiday. Although chocolates reign supreme during the holidays, people who are on a diet can participate by keeping small habits for a more fit Easter.

sweetness with limits

According to professionals, the secret to not overdoing it is to view sweets as something normal. “Trying to restrict a food generates anxiety and can even lead to binge eating. We shouldn’t try to resist, but remember that chocolate is a dessert”, says psychologist Sirlene Ferreira.

That doesn’t mean, however, that everything is released this weekend. “We have to negotiate with children to explain the harmful effects of excesses. This type of negotiation is also valid with ourselves. You have to respect yourself,” recalls the expert.

Nutritionist Thaílla recalls that the body does not know how to identify when it is a holiday or a weekend: therefore, the ideal is to maintain the daily food routine. In this way, chocolate should not be the main dish, not even at Easter time.

Tips for taking it easy

Some tips given by professionals can help maintain “choco-control” during Easter:

  1. Eat in pieces: the main recommendation is to avoid the temptation to devour all the chocolate received. Eating slowly, feeling the candy melt in your mouth, is essential for those who don’t want to overdo it;
  2. Keep meals regular: chocolate should not replace main courses. In addition, nutritionists advise having a reinforced breakfast with fresh fruit and light proteins, such as eggs, to avoid the urge to wake up with a chocolate bar;
  3. Hydrate yourself: chocolate, like all sweets, takes water from our digestive system, so we need to replace the liquid. Also, if the organism is hydrated, the feeling of hunger is less;
  4. Follow your exercise routine: be sure to move and practice the physical activities you already have a habit of doing.

If you can’t, don’t eat

Diabetics and lactose intolerant individuals suffer twice as much with the amount of chocolate on the table during Easter. In these cases of serious restrictions, professionals recommend that it is best not to take the sweets home and to be frank with people around you about your limitations.

“There are chocolates indicated for diabetics and other desserts that can be made for those with restrictive diets”, recalls nutritionist Elaine Cristina Rosa.

Even people with binge eating and who tend to take their emotions out on sweets should avoid any morsel. “Knowing that we have a compulsion, it is best to avoid the beast. Being honest, saying that you are going through a treatment, is fundamental for the cure”, adds Sirlene.

I ate too much. And now?

For those who stuck their foot in the jackfruit — or, in this case, in the bonbons — it is necessary to remember that not all is lost. “Instead of blaming ourselves, of making promises, we should reflect on why we exaggerated so much in the dose and try to understand the roots of it”, points out Sirlene.

The nutritionists add: “We need to be at peace with our choices. There is no feeling of well-being with guilt and working out too much during the week is not the answer to overdoing the Sunday dish”, says Thaílla.
