In light of the difficult social and economic conditions that have cast a shadow over mental health on many individuals, mental health experts stress the importance of giving this file great importance in terms of providing awareness and health treatments necessary to avoid the aggravation of this problem.

The Association of Psychiatrists in the Physicians Syndicate shows that global studies indicate that one in four people suffers from some type of mental disorder during his lifetime, and that 2.5 million Jordanians have suffered or will suffer from some types of mental disorders.

Director of the National Center for Mental Health, Dr. Khaled Al-Hadidi, says that the most common psychological problems are anxiety, stress and accumulated psychological depression, which appears in a form of mental disorders.

Al-Hadidi explains that the most prominent factors and causes that lead to the spread of mental disorders are genetic factors, environmental, social and economic conditions, the most prominent of which are poverty, unemployment, and place of residence, in addition to the abuse of substances that affect the mind.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health indicate that 80% of suicides are caused by depression, 10% are due to schizophrenia, and the rest are due to drugs and personality disorders.

Also, one of the factors affecting mental health is the exposure of people to emotional trauma in early childhood, whose effect appears with age, according to Al-Hadidi.

The number of specialized psychiatrists and residents in the National Center for Mental Health Hospital is 120, while the number of government clinics is 52 spread across all governorates of the Kingdom, receiving approximately 22,000 cases annually, according to the data of the Ministry of Health.

According to an official study on the psychological effects of the Corona pandemic, regarding 6 million people in Jordan, or regarding 65% of the population, have suffered from depression, stress, panic and excessive nervousness.

Senior consultant psychiatrist Dr. Walid Sarhan believes that the level of psychological services provided in the Kingdom, whether in the public or private sector, is low, below the required and weak, and there is a shortcoming in providing an integrated health team to treat citizens suffering from mental illnesses or disorders, and the various authorities do not provide enough for psychiatric patients. The challenges are also great.

The World Health Organization classifies the prevalence of mental depression as the second disease on the level of mental health globally, following heart disease, which is common, which leads to the inability to do anything.

The Ministry of Health in the world indicates the importance of allocating less than 2% of its budget to mental health, and that the Corona pandemic crisis has contributed to leaving significant effects on the mental health of humans.
