During an episode of his podcast bearing his name, Martin Lewis warned anyone who has swapped their oven for an air fryer or a microwave, LadBible reported on April 24.

“A microwave can give you constant heat, whereas an oven heats up to full temperature and then fills up again, so it doesn’t run at full power all the time,” says the business journalist and English animator.

“If you’re doing a whole roast and you’re cooking multiple potatoes, it’s probably cheaper to put them in the oven than to put five or six in the microwave since the latter only heats the product individually,” continues the expert.

Martin Lewis has prepared an equation to help you.

“You need to find the wattage of a product and then calculate how many kilowatts it uses. Thereafter, you multiply it by 34p per hour of use,” he explains.

As for air fryers, they are the cheapest option for cooking most foods. However, “it’s always best to use your oven if you’re cooking large quantities.”
