There are approximately 200 toxic species out of the 3,300 species of mushrooms in Quebec, which makes it important to identify which ones we pick, but certain techniques should be avoided according to experts.

Identification via a species recognition mobile app, for example, is not recommended at all.

“For mushrooms, forget it completely,” says the owner of Formations Champignons, Claire Bouchard.

There would be a good chance that this type of application would make a mistake in its identification.

“You have an error percentage which is around 80%,” she adds. So, that’s like playing Russian roulette, putting five balls out of six in the barrel.”

At least ten of the 200 toxic species are deadly.

“We’re talking regarding dying,” insists the expert.

One solution to avoid making a mistake is to be accompanied by an expert to learn or follow training.

“You really have to get started and learn, either by reading books,” she continues. The simplest thing is really to be supported, either by training groups, a bit like Formations Champignons, or even with the Circle of Mycologists.

To completely eliminate the risk, it is also possible to cultivate mushrooms rather than picking them.

According to the Quebec Poison Control Center, around a hundred people are hospitalized each year following being poisoned by consuming mushrooms.
