Ballet Hispánico premieres “Buscando a Juan” at the Met
Ballet Hispánico will present the piece “Buscando a Juan,” by Eduardo Vilaro, as part of the MetLiveArts summer 2023 season, July 13-15 at The Robert Lehman Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. In his most recent work, the artistic director and general director of the Ballet Hispánico is inspired by the exhibition Juan de Pareja, Afro-Hispanic painter. The MetLiveArts commission, which features dancers from the Ballet Hispánico, explores sancocho, or a mix of cultures and diasporas, and will consider the assumptions experienced when witnessing people of color in blank spaces regarding the exotic body and fixation on gestures and sensuality. Dominican rhythms party in Brooklyn
Dominican singer-songwriters Yasser Tejeda and Riccie Oriach and the band AfroDominicano will share a stage for the first time this Friday, July 14, in New York, to celebrate the launch of the digital communication medium New York Latin Live. The Canela Orchestra brings its sauce
Celebrate Colombian Independence Day with the all-female salsa band La Orquesta Canela. Founded in 1992 in Cali Colombia, under the direction of María Fernanda Múnera and Alvaro Cuervo Villafañe, La Orquesta Canela has been recognized with national and international awards, representing Latin women and the sound of tropical music and Colombian salsa. The group has released 11 albums featuring over 80 original compositions, received hundreds of awards, and toured the world. Colombian art at the Whitney Museum
Opening this Friday, July 14 at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the exhibition Ilana Savdie: Radical Contractions highlights emerging Colombian artist Ilana Savdie and her explorations of performance, transgression, identity, and power through vibrant and intense large-scale canvases. The artist’s striking new paintings and black-and-white drawings of hers, which are central to her paintings, will be on display for the first time at the Whitney, created specifically for this exhibition. PSYCHE-ATOMIC exhibition
Maison 10 Gallery is exhibiting PSYCHE-ATOMIC, a show in which Venezuelan-American artist Alejandra Mandelblum explores how subatomic energies and worlds might appear if they were made visible. In her first New York solo show, Mandelblum takes a contemporary psychedelic approach by conjuring the dimensions of imagined quantum realms. Her thought-provoking paintings invite viewers to immerse themselves in colorful new worlds that challenge our concepts of consciousness, separation, and perception. With a distinctive style that combines vibrant tones and organic geometries, her paintings are vivid, beautiful, and also haunting. PSYCHE-ATOMIC was curated by Henri Myers and Tom Blackie of Maison 10 Gallery in New York.
