Experience the Rich Heritage of the UAE at the Liwa Dates Festival: Competitions, Events, and Art Shows

Over the course of five days, since its inception on July 17, the Liwa Dates Festival has received about 34,000 visitors, citizens, residents and visitors to the country, who followed the competitions of the festival, which continues until July 30, in the city of Liwa in the Al Dhafra region, organized by the Festivals Management Committee and Cultural and Heritage Programs in Abu Dhabi, in cooperation with the Emirates Heritage Club.

The activities of the festival witness the influx of large numbers of the people of the region, visitors and tourists, to get acquainted with the ancient Emirati heritage, and to enjoy competitions, heritage events, activities and heritage artistic performances, all of which tell about the lives of the ancestors, and present a bright picture of the rich heritage of the UAE.

The visitors were also acquainted with the services provided by the institutions and entities participating in the exhibition pavilions, as well as the popular market shops, praising the organization and the diversity of national exhibits of high quality.

During the first five days of its launch, the Liwa Dates Festival received about eight tons of dates coming from state farms, and produced for this season 2023, as part of the competitions for “Rut Al-Dabbas Mazayna”, “Biggest Athaj”, Al-Shishi and Al-Khunaizi. The Dabbas Competition at the Liwa Dates Festival recorded the participation of more than 100 farmers from the country, for which 25 prizes were allocated, with a value of 446 thousand dirhams, while the competition for the largest model recorded the participation of more than 50 farmers, and 15 prizes were allocated for this competition, with a value of 234 thousand dirhams.

44 farmers participated in the “Rutab Al-Shishi competition”, and 54 farmers participated in the “Rut Al-Khunaizi competition”, during which they presented the best types of dates to compete for the first places.

During the festival, 20 heritage sculptures were displayed, reflecting memories from the past, and narrating the various details of the house of poetry, and its sections, with the correct names for the parts of the house, which brings to mind what the ancestors lived in the past, and shows generations the development, modernity, and status that is in line with the customs and traditions of our society associated with hospitality.

The heritage sculptures were displayed in the middle of the festival site within a corner that festival visitors can visit, view its components, and learn about the details of the house of poetry and its surroundings in the past.
