Buenos Aires attended one of the most outstanding events of the year: the finals of the Tango Dance World Cup. Organized by the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, this dance competition took the audience on an exciting journey through dance and music in a truly emblematic setting.
From 4 p.m. on Saturday, on a gray followingnoon (without rain), on Diagonal Norte and with the Obelisk in the background, the grand finale of the Tango BA World Dance Championship 2023 was held. With free admission, the public had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the passion and the art of tango in this historic place in the city.
Two couples from Buenos Aires were chosen as winners and are the new tango dance world champions: Suyay Quiroga-Johnny Carvajal in “Tango de Pista” and Julián Sánchez-Bruna Estellita in “Tango Escenario”. While in the “Senior Tango” category, a couple from Rosario made up of Sergio Decrin-Sandra Leal triumphed.

The finals were held in two main categories: Tango de Pista and Tango Escenario. In the Tango de Pista competition, 40 couples competed for the coveted prize, while in Tango Escenario, 20 couples showed their skill and creativity in dancing. In addition, viewers enjoyed concerts, tributes, and shows that highlighted the beauty and complexity of this iconic genre.

The artistic director of the event, Natacha Poberaj, has managed to create a space where tango lovers can appreciate both the established masters and the new generations that are leaving their mark on the contemporary tango scene. The music, the dance competition and the novelties that the festival offers are a reflection of the constant evolution of tango, a cultural expression that unites people of all ages and backgrounds.

One of the highlights of the event was the great closing show, which included the participation of three internationally renowned figures: Amelita Baltar, José Colángelo and Raúl Lavié. In addition, the 120 world championship competitors came together in an unforgettable choreography under the direction of Carlos Rivarola, a historic dancer and choreographer who has left his mark on the world of tango.
The competition was presided over by a jury of recognized international trajectory, ensuring that the participating couples demonstrate their excellence in dance. Both in the Final of Tango de Pista and in the Tango Escenario they had an exceptional level of competition.

The event culminated with the awards ceremony in both categories, Tango de Pista and Tango Escenario. A unique feature of this year is the inclusion of the “Best Senior Couple Award” in the Tango de Pista category, intended for couples over 55 years of age. This reflects Tango BA Mundial’s commitment to inclusion and diversity in the world of tango.
This edition of Tango BA Mundial attracted more than 650 couples from all over the world, representing countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Chile, Japan, Russia, Costa Rica, Ukraine, Colombia, India, Germany, the United States and many more. The diversity and passion for tango are evident in the international representation.

Argentina, the cradle of tango, was also strongly represented by dancers from various provinces, demonstrating that this genre has a special place in the heart of the entire country. From Buenos Aires to Tierra del Fuego, tango has united dancers from all regions of Argentina.
