For 13 years now, CosmoJazz, created by pianist André Manoukian, has been offering incredible concerts at altitude around the Chamonix valley at the end of July. This year, the crystalline voice of Tunisian Dhafer Youssef transcended the public. The CosmoJazz Festival ends on July 29 with the groups Kutu and Yemen Bues.

Every summer the cosmoJazz festival gives a real boost! This is the 13 edition this year. Despite the chilly atmosphere, it’s still an opportunity to listen to music in a different way, at altitude, within the majestic landscapes of the Mont Blanc massif.

Here, the artists perform in grandiose places, often on the mountainside, close to the glaciers. It is the pianist, composer and arranger André Manoukian who imagined this extraordinary festival. A delight for music-loving hikers. This music and mountain lover, who owns a house in Chamonix, knows the region well. It was quite naturally that he had the idea, 13 years ago, of making the mountains sing. “The star of Cosmojazz is the mountain, it’s not the musicians who come, they come humbly to pay homage to the beauty of the mountain”, explains the pianist.

The musicians are in osmosis with nature

Cosmojazz festival de Chamonix offers daytime concerts at altitude but also evenings in the city center with free access. The event mainly invites musicians who themselves want to play in unusual places, this is where all the magic of the concert lies. Like Tunisian vocalist Dhafer Youssef. Transcended by the mountain, this master of the Oud, chained the improvisations. “I really felt that with nature, and there it forces you to integrate with nature, to be one”, tells the musician who literally carried away the public during two hours of suspended concert. “JFelt it was fizzing, my cells were happy to be here” jokes Cindy, a spectator.

In the evening, the concerts are given in the city center. This Friday, July 28 at 8 p.m., the group Kutu will perform at Couttet Park and Saturday, July 29, Yemen Blues will close the festivities in this same place. With its Jazz spirit, this festival is also regarding improvised encounters. Every evening at 10 p.m., the Maison des Artistes welcomes musicians for a Cosmo Jam. Ask for the program!
