This is the 104th season of the NFL. It will also be the first season without Tom Brady since 1999, following his final retirement from the field. The Kansas City Chiefs will seek their third title in 5 years. Since 2022 the NFL launched a Global Marketing Program that allows teams to market their brand in different countries. 21 teams will participate in this program in 2023 in 14 countries. Mexico is the nation with the most interested teams, with 9, including the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers, of course. They are followed by the United Kingdom with 8 teams and Germany with 5.
Significant changes for this season
After 18 seasons, Aaron Rodgers followed in Brett Favre’s footsteps leaving the Green Bay Packers to join the New York Jets, along with 2 of his receivers: Cobb and Lazard. Derek Carr arrived at the New Orleans Saints in the restart of his career. Baker Mayfield covered Tom Brady’s departure from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jalen Ramsey came to the Miami Dolphins but suffered a serious knee injury. D’Andre Swift will reinforce the running attack of the Philadelphia Eagles following the departure of Miles Sanders.
Draft 2023
At the end of April, the 2023 NFL Draft was held, where 3 QB’s were chosen in the first four selections, following the previous year the first QB was chosen in position number 20 in the first round. This year Bryce Young was the first overall pick taken by the Carolina Panthers. The last time the team selected a QB at No. 1 overall was Cam Newton in 2011. The team with the most picks was the Los Angeles Rams, with 14, though none came in the first round. Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks were the teams with the most selections in the first two rounds, with 4 each. Alabama and Georgia were the universities that contributed the most selections, with 10 players each.
New head coaches
There are 5 teams that will have new coaches for this season. The return of Sean Payton to the NFL as coach of the Denver Broncos stands out, following a year of working as a commentator. Also returning is Frank Reich, who was fired from the Indianapolis Colts mid-season in 2022 to join the Carolina Panthers, the team for which he played. The first touchdown pass in Panthers history was thrown by Reich. The Arizona Cardinals parted with Kliff Kingsbury’s project and brought in Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon. Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen came to manage the Indinapolis Colts. DeMeco Ryans debut as head coach with the Houston Texans.
Diversity and Inclusion in the NFL
In 2015, Jen Welter became the first female trainee coach in the NFL, working with the Arizona Cardinals’ linebackers in training camps and preseason. The following year, Kathryn Smith became the first woman to be signed full-time by an NFL team, joining the Buffalo Bills in QA. Last summer, the NFL already had 15 women in coaching positions within training camp, this year it will be 16, a record for any men’s professional sports league in the world.
