The City of Ath gave access to its backstage this Sunday and many people came to visit the premises and the various administration services. Several activities particularly attracted visitors. This is particularly the case for the Works department which offered to test machines such as a crane, a Gluton, a street vacuum cleaner or even the electric weeding brush. “We wanted to create a living workshop rather than a static stand, so that people might test things. For example, they can climb into the crane and manipulate it. Olivier, our usual operator on this crane, gives them express training then the visitors take the earth and turn to bring it to the other side. We even have children who have done it. They really like it,” rejoices Cédric Minet, strategic director of the technical service.

An activity that is sure to please children. “I came with my son. I worked for the City and I come to see the equipment used by the teams. My son was able to try his hand at the crane, it’s very cool! », confides Vincent. ” I am very happy ! », adds Max, 8 years old, following testing the crane.
The reserve and the giants
The library was also open to the public. An unmissable visit for any self-respecting Athois since visitors were able to see the busts of the five giants of the Cortège, stored in the reserve. Guided by the head librarian Sébastien Morancé, they were also able to enter the book reserve, theoretically closed to the public. “This Sunday, people were able to see the five heads of the giants, some took photos near them. I give them a brief history then I show them the reserve which has around 40,000 books of which 9,000 are part of the old collections, that is to say the oldest books, which constituted the first collection of the library when it was founded. creation in 1842. They date from the 17th and 18th centuries and some even date from the 16th century.”
A cat bar
But the highlight of this day was the cat bar, set up especially for this day, to raise awareness of sterilization. “We collaborated with The Lucky Stars, which brought us ten cats. All of these cats are adoptable. Ladies from the shelter chat with people, telling the story of each cat. My colleague and I are employed in the City’s Environment department and we work on sterilization. We looked for ways to raise awareness and we had this idea to attract visitors and take the opportunity to talk regarding the importance of sterilization,” confides Jessica Bonenfant.
