Next week, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts will be a must-see for dance lovers thanks to the performance of the third BAND Together Dance Festivala series of events that celebrates different styles of dance and brings together the best companies in New York.
The different shows will be led by members of the Ballet Hispánico, American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey, New York City Ballet and Dance Theater of Harlem, during the five consecutive days of the festival that will take place from July 25 to 29.
The festival will also have workshops for those interested in learning regarding the world of dance and practicing some steps.
One of the presentations that stands out this year is the world premiere of “Pas de O’Farill”, by Cuban choreographer Pedro Ruiz, who put together a duet between the companies Ballet Hispánico and New York City Ballet to celebrate the Latin jazz music of Arturo O ‘Farill, integrating elements of classical ballet and Afro-Cuban rhythm.
“We talked regarding all the possible choreographies we can do and the topic of O’Farill’s music came up, which gives ballet another perspective,” said Ruiz.
Ruiz is a dance veteran with more than 20 years in the industry, many of them with the Ballet Hispánico, the largest Latino cultural organization in the country that explores a variety of dances such as salsa, merengue, jazz and more. The choreographer and director had the task of uniting the different styles of ballet between both companies for this presentation.
“We will show that ballet has different styles, and how the Latin rhythm influences our technique,” said the choreographer.
It should be noted that it is the first time that a Latino has created the choreography for this festival, and Ruiz was selected for his talent and avant-garde ballet.

“There is more to ballet than just classical,” Ruiz added.
In addition to focusing on showcasing the art of these dance professionals, the festival also focuses on teaching. Those interested in learning more regarding this art can participate in different workshops that will be offered free of charge and regardless of their age or level of experience.
“The workshops will undoubtedly be a very entertaining experience for the public. Each night, one of the companies will lead a workshop and teach their own techniques,” added Ruiz.
Both the workshops and the shows of the “BAAND Together Dance Festival” are part of “Summer for the City”, sponsored by Chanel, and are free admission. Access will be given 30 minutes before each presentation.
“Chanel is a historic brand that has always appreciated the art of dance and it is a great honor that the festival is possible thanks to them,” said Ruiz.
