A stage drama ‘Mahangi Eid Aur Saste Log’ is being organized in Karachi this Eid.
The Independent Urdu team reached the Arts Council to find out about the stage play where many artists were busy rehearsing.
They also saw some faces who have been doing theater for the last 30 years like Saleem Afridi and Parvez Siddiqui etc.
Saleem is counted among the contemporaries of Moin Akhtar and Umar Sharif. Having performed in over 300 stage plays, Saleem has also worked on film, radio and TV.
Salim, who rose to fame with the stage drama ‘Bakra Qasto Par’, told Independent Urdu that people gradually moved away after the introduction of dance and immoral content in the plays.
He said: ‘Lahore plays gave a different color to the theater, they have more dance and less comedy, which is the reason why the theater tradition could not survive.’
He said that in the past there were hundreds of plays every year, but now stage plays are performed only on Eid.
He also attributed the unrest and inflation of Karachi city to the destruction of the theatre.
Talking about Umar Sharif, Saleem said that he had the honor of working with Umar Sharif and Moin Akhtar and he received a lot of praise.
‘Umar Sharif’s acting and artistic ability is second to none.
‘People don’t have money for this entertainment anymore. Anwar Maqsood also has plays for which very expensive tickets are bought.
