Expensive: 4.5 billion-year-old meteorite crashes into resident’s garden

A meteorite, 4.5 billion years old, was discovered on September 10 in the Cher, in the middle of a resident’s garden. A rare phenomenon, which can advance science.

She makes an incredible discovery. A meteorite fell in the garden of a Cherienne, on the night of September 9 to 10, 2023. This is an extremely rare phenomenon in France, having happened only three times since the start of the century.

The stone was authenticated by Sylvain Bouley, professor at the University of Paris-Saclay and president of the Astronomical Society of France. It brings together all the characteristics of a meteorite: on the outside, a fusion crust linked to entry into the atmosphere and on the inside, shiny gravels due to the presence of metal.

4.5 billion years old

Its age is estimated at 4.5 billion years. According to Sylvain Bouley, the stone entered the atmosphere at around 50,000 km/h. It weighs 714 grams and even broke the resident’s garden table.

The stone would therefore have carried out a very long cosmic wandering because it would come from the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, entrusted the meteorite to the natural history museum in the hope of advancing science. Each event of this kind is an opportunity for astronomers. “What we are trying to understand is the evolution of our solar system and to better understand how the planets of the solar system were formed. Each meteorite is a new brick to bring a little bit of knowledge,” says Sylvain Bouley.
