Expansive Art Exhibition at Landesgalerie: Exploring Society, Time, and the Pandemic Period

There is a lot of space in the Landesgalerie in the Eisenstadt cultural center, and Wolfgang Horwath is dying to fill it. The pictures, which can be seen at the big show until September 17, are now on their way from the studio in Buchschachen, where Horwath, who was born in Northern Burgenland, has lived and worked for decades.

It is also many years that he is looking back on with the exhibition, not only in terms of time, but above all in terms of content: “… the best of all worlds”, as the title says, means the whole thing, the pandemic period (with the series “Black Spring”) as well as society in general and the individual anyway.

“I deal with what surrounds us. I don’t have to express myself freely in that sense – my pictures are, so to speak, statements on a socio-philosophical situation,” says Wolfgang Horwath in the BVZ interview, giving an outlook on the exhibition, which will include more than 40 works.

The exhibition will be opened on June 29 (7 p.m.) by Barbara Weißeisen-Halwax, Managing Director of Kulturbetriebe, state councilor Daniela Winkler and curator Barbara Mithlinger. Horwath then puts his proverbial stamp on the Burgenland State Gallery with his works until the autumn.

what is art “Communication!”

As one of the most productive representatives of the local scene, Horwath has always been known as a protagonist of supporting artists’ associations, for example as curator of the EU Art Network and on the board of the Oberwart Open House.

He has often worked with writers over the years and created stage sets for Peter Wagner. Word and writing are not uncommon in his pictures. “Because art is communication,” says Horwath. This also means that not every word has to be clearly legible: “Then people get closer to the picture, and that can’t hurt either…”
