For his part, the president of China, Xi Jinping, described the expansion of the block as “a new starting point” for the interaction within the framework of the Brics and declared that it is “a historic day” for the group.
The Chinese leader added that the new members of the Brics will bring a “new quality” to the group’s interaction mechanism.
According to Xi Jinping, the move to invite new members shows the determination of the Brics countries to expand their internationalization.
Brazil, Russia, India and China created the Brics group in 2006, which South Africa joined in 2010 by adding the letter S to the acronym.
The block represents more than 42 percent of the world’s population and 30 percent of the planet’s territory, as well as 23 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) and 18 percent of world trade.
