THE ESSENTIAL

Nurses, midwives and pharmacists can now prescribe certain vaccines. Pharmacists in health establishments, professionals in medical biology laboratories and postgraduate pharmacy students can also vaccinate (under conditions). Possibilities of vaccination which are becoming numerous but which do not concern all vaccines or all people.

Since August 10, following the publication of 2 decrees, pharmacists, nurseset midwives are authorized to prescribe vaccines while vaccination by other health professionals is also permitted.

More vaccination sites

Nurses, midwives and pharmacists were already authorized to vaccinate with several vaccines (diphtheria, tetanus, influenza, etc.). Their skills have been expanded. From now on, they can prescribe and administer those included in the vaccination schedule (tetanus, flu, hepatitis B, etc.) to people aged eleven and over, thus avoiding a mandatory visit to the attending physician.

Of course, these practices are supervised. Each of the professionals, if he has not completed any training in the administration and prescription of vaccines during his medical or paramedical course, must necessarily follow one in order to practice these vaccinations. Supporting evidence.

Added to this is the possibility of being vaccinated by other health professionals. Indeed, pharmacists practicing in health establishments, professionals working in medical biology laboratories and postgraduate students in pharmacy are also entitled, under certain conditions, to vaccination.

Not all vaccines and not all patients are affected

Things have therefore evolved in terms of vaccination. But it is important to note that these health professionals cannot inject all vaccines and not to everyone. The boundaries are drawn by theorder of August 8, 2023. For example, pharmacists and nurses cannot prescribe or inject vaccines in children under 11 years old. In addition, live attenuated vaccines (measles, mumps, BCG for example) remain the exclusive competence of doctors for immunocompromised patients.

There is therefore a wider choice among health professionals to get you vaccinated. But without forgetting that the attending physician must remain a main element in the follow-up of the patient.

Thanks to the extension of vaccination skills and real coordination between health professionals, the improvement of vaccination coverage, a real public health issue, seems to be on the right track.
