A few days ago, the USPO informed pharmacists that they were now authorized to vaccinate outside their pharmacy.
In this communication we also indicated that, as always, pharmacists would work in collaboration with other health professionals et respecting the patient’s choices.
We all know it: some patients cannot travel to be vaccinated and do not have access to a healthcare professional other than their pharmacist.
This is particularly the case for HPV vaccination in colleges, but also for Covid vaccination for certain residents in EHPADs or at home.
This legal analysis from the Ministry of Health therefore allows pharmacists responding to a patient request to carry out their mission in strict compliance with regulations and to be covered by their insurance to do so.
Many pharmacists have already been faced with these situations. As they always did, they will continue to first refer the patient to the nurse or doctor if they are available. Otherwise, pharmacists will be able to vaccinate at home, in order to meet the patient’s needs.
The USPO has always defended prevention strategy shared with all healthcare professionals. We, health professionals, all have collectively for the purpose of strengthen vaccination coverage ; and we will achieve it together!
The effectiveness of prevention measures will depend on our collaboration.
Furthermore, I would like to indicate to the union calling for “a boycott of pharmacies” that if this threat were carried out, the USPO would not fail to alert the DGCCRF.
Finally, I am alarmed by the lack of discernment of another nursing union calling, in the international context we know, for a “war” between pharmacists and nurses.
I remind these two unions that their actions and words will once morest patient expectationsstrengthening access to care and an ambitious public health strategy.
Very fraternally,
Pierre-Olivier Variot, President of the USPO
