Vienna (OTS) – The paintings The Last Rites by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller and The Beautiful Fountain in front of the Frauenkirche in Nuremberg by Rudolf von Alt were bequeathed to the Belvedere as legacies from a private collection and are now part of the museum collection.

Director General Stella Rollig: These new acquisitions not only complement the world’s largest inventory of paintings by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, but also expand the collection of Rudolf von Alt’s city views. Thus, our research on two of the most important Austrian artists of the 19th century can be further strengthened.

Pictures by outstanding Austrian painters

The Last Rites (1846) by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller is an excellent work by the artist that bears witness to the religiosity practiced in the Biedermeier period. The two-part composition with the group of mourners on the right and the priest on the left deserves special mention. He is regarding to go into the room of death with the ciborium, in which the consecrated hosts are located as the last food for the journey. The clergyman’s clothing was very vividly characterized by Waldmüller, especially the delicate lace trimmings on the ruffle and the stole embroidered with gold thread. The representation is located in a press house. As early as 2009, The Last Rites might be shown as a loan in the Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller exhibition in the Lower Belvedere.

The beautiful fountain in front of the Frauenkirche in Nuremberg (1854) is one of the masterful cityscapes by Rudolf von Alt, who meticulously worked out small details in this oil painting. The work gives an insight into the hustle and bustle on the main market of Nuremberg, with the so-called beautiful fountain in the center and the Gothic Frauenkirche as a backdrop.

Both paintings will first be examined in the restoration department and will be presented to visitors in future exhibitions.
