Expanding Rail Offering: Sncb’s Ambitious Plan to Increase Train Passengers by 30% by 2032

On December 10, Sncb will launch the first phase of its plan to expand its rail offering, with the ambition of increasing the number of train passengers by 30% by 2032. In the first phase, the extensions are still limited. The train company is also having to reduce journeys due to a staff shortage.

The transport plan covers the period from December 2023 to December 2026 and is expected to increase the number of kilometers traveled by trains by 7.4% during this period. According to the railway company, this is the most ambitious plan ever. At the end of the period, an additional 2,000 trains are expected to run each week.

The first adaptations will take place on December 10, Sncb indicated in a press release. Travelers can already find them in the route calculator on the SNCB website and application.

Among the new features in Flanders, Noorderkempen station will have a second train per hour to and from Antwerp-Central, all day during the week. Currently, this second train only runs during morning and evening rush hours.

In Wallonia, several stations will be better connected to Charleroi airport, with a new train between Louvain, Fleurus and Charleroi-Central, as well as an increase in the frequency of trains on the Wavre – Jambes link. In and around Liège, the S (suburban) offer will be reinforced during the week, with a greater frequency of the Liège-Saint-Lambert – Verviers-Central, Flémalle-Haute – Liers and Liège – Visé trains.

The staff shortage which has affected SNCB for several months will, however, limit the circulation of certain P trains (scheduled during rush hour) around Grammont, Ghent and Oudenaarde and the Puurs – Essen link. Furthermore, some P trains with low attendance due to the increase in teleworking will no longer run, in order to reallocate resources in a more relevant way in trains where the number of passengers is increasing.
