Expanded Access to Vaccinations: Pharmacists, Nurses, and Midwives Now Authorized to Prescribe and Vaccinate

Since August 9, it is no longer mandatory to go through your doctor to get vaccinated. A decree published in Official newspaper now allows pharmacists, nurses and midwives to prescribe and vaccinate – only with vaccines listed in the vaccination schedule – all people aged 11 and over.

For the former, this now means that they are involved in the three stages of vaccination, only they being authorized to deliver the vaccines. Until now, all were authorized to administer several vaccines, such as that once morest the flu or tetanus. With the Covid-19 epidemic, millions of French people also went to pharmacies to be vaccinated.

“The Covid has changed everything”

“The first flu vaccination experiments only started six years ago. But the Covid has changed everything. Pharmacies carried out between 80% and 90% of vaccinations in town. We have clearly seen that almost all pharmacists have received training”, explained to West France Bénédicte Bertholom, Director General of the Union of Community Pharmacy Unions.

This decision should make access to vaccination even more accessible, and thus increase French vaccination coverage. “This is an essential step to facilitate access to vaccination and improve prevention,” said Aurélien Rousseau, Minister of Health, who also thanked his predecessor, François Braun, for his involvement in this case.

To be authorized to carry out these vaccinations, pharmacists will however have to follow a training course lasting 5.30 p.m., “including a compulsory 10.30 a.m. theoretical module”, according to the Union of community pharmacists. And pharmacists already trained to administer vaccines once morest Covid-19 will be able to do without the practical module, which lasts seven hours.
