How to train your eyes?Getty Images
In a world where we spend hours looking at screens, the health of our eyes is more crucial than ever. When you read or work with screens, you use your eyes in a very specific and repetitive way that can end up seriously affecting our vision. The reticular glasses, along with other toys and tools, are simple and little-known solutions to help us exercise our eyes and improve our vision. How do they work?
These are the latest news from the Mobile World Congress: even glasses that translate languages
Dr. Ainhoa de Federico, specialist in natural vision, research professor at the University of Toulouse and creator of the See Clear Again Method, proposes five toys and tools to take care of your eyes and exercise them to see better:
Reticular glasses
These glasses, also known as pinhole glasses, are characterized by having a series of small holes. By limiting the amount of light that enters the eye, activate foveal vision, which is our highest quality vision. We recommend that you take into account the following instructions for use:
- They can be used for readingworking with screens, as a substitute for sunglasses on the beach and for many other activities in environments where we do not need to have peripheral vision.
- They should not be used for activities such as drivingplay sports outdoors when good peripheral vision is required or if there is little light.
- It is recommended to use them up to two hours a day, followed or distributed at different times.
In addition to providing immediate sharpness in many cases, they also train the eyes to acquire better vision habits such as foveal awareness and saccades, and see better even when not in use.

Brock rope
Is regarding a cord with balls of different colors and allows you to stimulate your vision to keep it in shape. You can make it at home, placing colored tweezers instead of the balls. This is the way to use it:
- Hold the rope with your arms or tie it to a doorknob or shelf to make it longer. If you do it with another person, each person can hold one end up to their nose.
- Attach as many clothespins as you want. If they are painted in colors it is better.
- Hold the string close to your nose and look at the furthest clip, then the next, and so on until you reach the closest one.
- You can also remove the clothespins and run your eyes along the rope from the farthest end to the closest end, continuously.
- As your gaze travels down the rope, you will notice a crossover and a double rope. If you look at the far end you will see the shape of an A, if you look at the near end you will see a V and at points in the center of the rope, you will see an X that moves around.
- Alternate between looking near and far several times and you will see how your near convergence improves.
The reason you see two strings crossing at one point is because each eye sees a slightly different image of the string, because there is a distance between both eyes and the place where the string “crosses.” So we see only one, it is the point we are focusing on at that moment. The goal of Brock’s rope games is to learn to maintain good binocular coordination, exercising convergence and brain fusion of the image. With this practice you will discover that going cross-eyed is not only harmless, but also beneficial as an exercise.
finger puppets
You can do these exercises eye stretch by simply following the movements of your fingers with your eyes, but if you use finger puppets, you will stimulate your eyes and vision even more by wanting to pay attention to the details of the fun puppets. Follow these steps:
- Slowly move one finger up and down 3 to 5 times and follow it with your eyes.
- Slowly move one finger left and right 3 to 5 times and follow it with your eyes.
- Slowly move one finger diagonally (up right, down left, up left, down right) 3 to 5 times and follow it with your eyes.
- Slowly move one finger in semicircles, 3 times up and 3 times down, and follow it with your eyes.
- Slowly move one finger 3 times in a clockwise circle and follow it with your eyes.
You can do it by moving your head or just your eyes, you can do it closer to your face or further away and you can vary the amplitude and speed. Each exercise and its application will facilitate relaxation and good tone of the eye muscles, in each case it will bring you different benefits. Don’t make a special effort to focus, but pay attention to the details of the finger puppet that interest you.
Un post-it
Something as simple as a sticky note or post-it used as a patch It allows you to practice exercises to stimulate each eye separately and subsequently coordinate your eyes better, which is all the more important if you have one eye that sees better than the other.
Start by stimulating the eye that sees best. To do this, cover the other eye with the patch and do the following:
- Look at an interesting object up close and far away, while moving it in different ways.
- Move your fingers at the widest angle at which you can still see them while looking straight ahead.
- Do the exercises with Brock’s rope.
- Walk around the house.
- Read only with that eye.
- At the end, close your eyes and clap to integrate the experience.
Next, do the same for twice as long with the other eye, covering the eye that sees more clearly. Next, repeat the process with both eyes uncovered.
colored balls
With these exercises you will be able Improve eye-hand-brain-body coordination. All balls of any size, color, weight, texture or material are suitable:
- With the post-it placed between your eyebrows, pass the ball from one hand to the other and follow it with your eyes. Do it by moving your head and other times without moving it, just with your eyes.
- Try a little juggling with one or more balls. Let yourself be surprised and laugh when you drop them.
- Cover one eye with a post-it over your eyebrow and play throwing the ball with other people for a while; Repeat it, changing the post-it note. If you do it outdoors, the benefits will be even greater.
We recommend practice clapping as a break between the different exercises, to relax the eyes and integrate each experience. These are the basic steps of clapping:
- Remove glasses or contact lenses if you usually wear them.
- Relax your hands, for example, by shaking or rubbing them, and place them in a spoon shape.
- Place the fingers of one hand over the fingers of the other and place them in the center of your forehead.
- Using the palms of your hands, occlude around the eye sockets. If you have your eyes open, you should notice that there is hardly any light coming in.
- Make sure to keep your eyes closed and relaxed during the process, without covering your nose.
In addition to practicing clapping between the different exercises, we recommend doing it often during the day and especially before going to sleep.
Like any muscle in the body, the eyes also need exercise, and with the right help, we can ensure that we compensate for the stresses we frequently subject them to so that they continue to function at their maximum capacity. If we do it in a fun way it is all the better.
