The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week. However, the majority struggle to meet the recommendations on a daily basis.

A research team at Fuwai Hospital in China conducted a study to determine whether exercising once or twice a week would help with weight loss. It analyzed the physical data of more than 9,600 people aged 20 to 59 who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Survey of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (NHANES) from 2011 to 2018.

As a result of the analysis, 3,277 of these people were found to exercise regularly every day. The number of people who exercise only on weekends was counted at 772. However, people who exercised only one or two days a week, including on weekends, tended to exercise for relatively high duration and intensity. The abdominal fat, waist circumference, total body fat mass, and BMI measurement indices of 772 people who exercised only once or twice a week were lower than those of the rest of the people who did not exercise. It is said to be close to the figures of those who exercise every day.

“I thought regarding office workers, drivers of buses and other vehicles, and other workers who have to sit for a lot of time all day,” said Dr. Lihua Zhang, author of the study. “They exercise on a daily basis to eliminate the health risks of a sedentary lifestyle.” “They try to exercise, but they have little time to go to the gym,” he said, adding, “Our research might provide them with alternative options to stay healthy.”

The results of this study were published in the international academic journal Obesity.
