Updated 11/24/23 – Following the excitement caused by the announcement of the culling of the beavers in Cul-des-Sarts, Mayor Claudy Noiret explains having received from Minister Tellier’s office, a letter asking not to immediately kill the animals while we see if there is an alternative to slaughtering them.
The town of Couvin has obtained an exceptional exemption, the two beavers of Cul-des-Sarts will be slaughtered, published L’Avenir. The beaver is a protected species. When the presence of the animal causes too much inconvenience, it is normally moved or its dam is destroyed or drained. In this case, the DNF considers that no solution other than slaughtering the animal can work.
On the one hand, the situation of the dam erected by the beavers. It is built near a road which is regularly flooded. A dangerous situation for motorists. A sewage treatment plant is also just a stone’s throw away. She might also suffer damage.
On the other hand, the two beavers have established themselves on the Eau Noire, a very steep river, in an urbanized area. “The beaver is resilient, when you destroy its dam, it rebuilds it. So in one or two weeks, the dam will be there once more and the road will be flooded once more” explains Antoine Porsont from the DNF cantonment of Couvin. “Moving the animal in this case is not possible. As the river is steep, we will just move the problem. If we move the beaver further away, for example on the Eau Blanche, there is “other beavers and there will be conflicts. The animal risks becoming disoriented, moving around and we will cause its death. This is a truly special, exceptional case.”.
In 2023, the region received 97 requests for exemptions concerning the beaver (dam destruction, movement or slaughter of the animal), 5 exemptions were granted for the slaughter of the animal.
