Executive withdraws fuel cards from taxi drivers – Jornal OPaís

The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, decreed the approval of the removal of the cap on gasoline subsidy cards for taxi drivers, motorcycle taxi drivers, boat managers and other operators who benefited last year, as a measure to mitigate the partial removal of subsidies to fuels

The Presidential Decree, published yesterday, in Diário da República nº 68/24, justifies the measure with the need to safeguard the purposes and effects of the fuel price reform, prevent distortions in price formation and guarantee the sustainability of public finances.

The decision to remove the cap on gasoline subsidy cards for taxi drivers and other operators, according to the Diário da República, comes into force from April 30th of this year. It is recalled that the Executive began delivering the first gasoline subsidy cards in June 2023, following the announcement of the gradual withdrawal of gasoline subsidies, which went from 160 to 300 kwanzas/liter.

The new gasoline price, at the time, did not cover taxis and motorcycle taxis, as well as the productive sector (agriculture, fishing, industry, among other areas) which, upon registration, continued to benefit from the State subsidy. The subsidy, at the time, was justified with the aim of ensuring the normal movement of people and goods, transported by taxi drivers, motorcycle taxi drivers and boat managers.
