Executive interference in judicial affairs of judges will not be tolerated: Chief Justice

On the issue of judges of Islamabad High Court, the Chief Justice has taken a blunt stand and said that any kind of interference by the executive in judicial affairs will not be tolerated and the independence of the judiciary will not be compromised under any circumstances.

In a statement issued by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, it is stated that the Chief Justice of Pakistan met the judges who wrote the letter and heard their concerns.

It is stated in the statement that the letter of 6 judges of Islamabad High Court was received by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faiz Isa on April 25, 2024, following which the Chief Justice called a meeting of all the judges who wrote the letter and met them individually. Listened to other concerns.

Considering the seriousness of the allegations made in the letter, a meeting was convened following Iftar at the residence of the Chief Justice of Pakistan on March 26, in which the judges of the Islamabad High Court participated. The meeting lasted for two and a half hours.

After that, the Chief Justice also met the Attorney General, Minister of Law and Justice, Senior Judge and the delegation of the Supreme Court Bar Association. These judges are senior judges of the Bar Council and are based in Islamabad.

According to the statement, the Prime Minister assured the Chief Justice of Pakistan in today’s meeting that he will take all measures to ensure the independence of the judiciary, while necessary legislation will also be passed along with instructions to the relevant departments.

The Prime Minister said in the meeting that legislation will be enacted according to paragraph 53 of the Faizabad sit-in case decision.

Taking a blunt stand, the Chief Justice said that any kind of interference by the executive in the judicial affairs of the judges will not be tolerated and the independence of the judiciary will not be compromised in any way.

According to the announcement, the Chief Justice met immediately following the letter of the six judges of the Islamabad High Court, all the judges of the Supreme Court unanimously decided to meet the Chief Justice with the Prime Minister. In the Prime Minister Chief Justice meeting, it was decided to establish a high level inquiry commission.

In the statement, it is said that in the meeting with the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faiz Isa said that he will not compromise on the independence of the judiciary under any circumstances. Cause rule of law and strong democracy is established.

It should be noted that the full court meeting headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan was held on the second day today, in which all the judges of the Supreme Court participated and the letter of the judges of the Islamabad High Court and the constitutional and legal status of the situation that arose following that.
