Mother and teachers with mutual accusations of bullying. The case is from the capital’s National Science and Mathematics High School, where a student repeats the ninth grade after a series of pairs in geography. According to the boy’s mother, the poor grades were written based on subjective criteria, including after his refusal to discuss the Istanbul Convention in class. The school management denied the allegations and said that teachers were subjected to pressure and harassment from the mother.
“These are the awards and successes of my son Rosen collected over the years,” mother Ani Kirilova told BNT.
“This is part of the documentation related to the inspections of the RUO Sofia – City on Ms. Kirilova’s complaints,” replied Ivaylo Ushagelov – director of the National Nature and Mathematics High School.

One story with two completely different points of view. On one side, Rosen’s mother, a math honors student who is now repeating ninth grade after a string of geography doubles. Ani Kirilova admits that the beginning of the saga is after a letter she sent to the school director with the insistence that a check be made on the transparency of the qualification for an international competition in mathematics. After that, the geography pairs began, including the remedial exams.
“A test pair that is done with textbooks. One of the written tests a correct question with correct answers is not marked as correct, which leads to the next pair, etc. There is a no-attendance pair for independent work that is not set in writing at School on a day when he was not present at school,” the mother points out.
According to Ani Kirilova, one of the couples came after her signal. She filed it after her son reported that in two or three geography lessons the students commented on the Istanbul Convention. They also had independent work on the document.
“Giving 15-year-old children a legal text that is controversial for Bulgarian legislation is strange, if you ask me, whatever you wanted to do. My son refused to write anything because he said “I’m 15, it’s complicated for adults, for lawyers, I don’t want to be misguided and wrong, no matter what position I express”. which was actually an inkling, perhaps this is the correct statement, of the couple’s draft, i.e. after two months this couple was made official,” says Kirilova.
The Ministry of Education stated that an internal inspection and an external inspection by the Regional Department of Education were carried out. They found that what was stated in the signal did not correspond to the objective data. A new ministry review has now been ordered and experts will re-examine all the circumstances. They also point out that the convention is not part of the curriculum. The school said it was not actually covered in geography class.
“It was not considered in a geography lesson, there are no notes in the notebooks, students were talked to, optional homework was assigned in order to work with a text that they wish to read and express an opinion on the relevant material that they were currently studying in geography. It was never considered in the geography section. The teacher has the right to choose the methods and the documents with which to work,” explains Ivaylo Ushagelov.
In a statement today, the school’s leadership, board of trustees and community council say teachers are being repeatedly harassed. The principal explained that an independent commission with the participation of other geography teachers had tested the boy.
“I absolutely categorically state that there is pressure from Mrs. Kirilova on colleagues to write the higher grade. One colleague maintains the position that he must cover the relevant skills and knowledge set out in the curriculum. It started from there that by the decision of Mrs. Kirilova, Rosen did not attend geography classes for the entire second term,” assures the director.
“He studied at a fairly high level in mathematics, and actually now, instead of continuing to develop, he repeats, because this is self-mutilation with a child,” explains the mother.
The school said a class-action civil suit was filed for defamation of the school. The mother comments that the geography teacher is also suing her, but she has already won the case.
