According to an article in the British newspaper The Times, Boris Johnson, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, secretly flew to Venezuela last month for unofficial talks with Nicolás Maduro.

The former prime minister took a private jet from a family vacation in the Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic to a location outside Caracas.

According to the British publication, the topics they would have addressed would be related to Venezuela’s relationship with Russia and the war in Ukraine; the possible supply of weapons or some type of Venezuelan military support to the government of Vladimir Putin.

The Maduro administration, until now, has tried to keep its distance from the war but has maintained a political defense of Russia.

According to The Times’ sources, Johnson spoke with Maduro about the Essequibo dispute with Guyana, the former British colony, with the aim of “reducing tensions.”

Let us remember that last month the Royal Navy sent a patrol ship to the region, which led Maduro to attack the “act of hostile provocation” that was rejected by Venezuela.

Finally, it is noted that they also spoke about holding free elections in Venezuela scheduled for the second half of 2024.

Johnson would have discussed the conditions to normalize relations with the United Kingdom, which does not accept the legitimacy of the Maduro administration. Relations between Venezuela and the United Kingdom have been broken since 2019, when the British recognized Juan Guaido as interim president of Venezuela.
