FranceA controversial decision. A private beach in Fréjus, in the Var, has chosen to limit the number of children under 12 admitted with their parents this summer. From now on, they are authorized to settle only on the first row of deckchairs. “People pay a rental to have peace” justifies the owner of the place.
It’s a small pleasure that some vacationers like to treat themselves to during the summer: the rental of deckchairs on a private beach. In Fréjus, the boss of the Alba estate, located by the sea, has taken a radical decision to ensure the peace of mind of his customers. It has chosen to limit access to its beach to children under 12 accompanied by their parents, thus favoring the “Adults only” concept. In concrete terms, they can only sit on the first row of deckchairs.
“We limit a maximum number of children on the beach area. We only accept in the front line so that the children can play in front. The people who are nearby come to rest, pay for a deckchair rental to have peace”, justifies Sébastien Mabille, owner of the French private beach, at the microphone of BFM TV.
Divided opinions
As the media points out, this new rule is rather well received by Alba regulars. “The parents did not take care of the children at all, they were behind, almost on our deckchairs or playing in the middle”, explains in particular a client at BFM, who approves of this “good” decision on the part of the boss. But reviews are more mixed among holidaymakers on nearby public beaches. “I find it completely absurd. I think everyone has the right to have fun, to have a good time, including children,” said a father.
In recent times, spaces reserved only for adults are multiplying in France (but also in Belgium). “I believe that demand has increased perhaps under several effects, that of isolation under the Covid and the pleasure that some people have found in being calm”, analyzes Jean-Pierre Mas, president of the union “Les entreprises du voyage”, at the microphone of BFM TV. Hotels, restaurants, bars and now beaches: the “Adults only” offer is becoming a real marketing argument.
