Sure, it’s functional and might help a college student turn their assignment around, but let’s be honest: it’s mostly for the giggles. If you crave clever illustrations instead of textbook visuals, the Image Playground will eventually wow you with sketches—but right now, it’s just a tease.
So, here’s my conclusion: until Apple adds something gloriously thrilling or genuinely useful, we’re left playing with our Genmoji horses and flipping images that even a child could create faster with a crayon. But for now, let’s embrace the absurdity and run with it because, honestly, who wouldn’t want to share a whimsical horse wearing a birthday hat? At least it’s better than the endless stream of basic memes we’ve all grown to love… or loathe.

However, I was confronted with disappointment upon being placed on a waitlist for the Image Playground and Genmoji features. Although I typically do not utilize emojis extensively, the prospect of crafting a custom emoji tailored for specific occasions has sparked my interest in using them more frequently. Today, at long last, I received the eagerly awaited new splash screen for Image Creation, signifying that Apple has finally set my iPhone up for the new features.
To embark on your Genmoji journey, simply open the Messages app and tap the text field to activate the keyboard. In the lower left corner, you will notice the familiar emoji icon; tap on it. Adjacent to the “Describe an Emoji” field, you will see a “+” icon. Upon tapping it, you will be redirected to the New Genmoji page, where you can type in the custom emoji you wish to create. For instance, if you decide to create a horse wearing a birthday hat, once the image is generated, simply tap the Add button located in the upper right corner to seamlessly integrate the custom emoji into your intended message. You even have the option to save your unique creation as a sticker and accompany it with a caption.

For accessing the Image Playground, navigate to the App Library, found on the last page of your iPhone’s home screen, and tap the Image Playground app icon featuring a playful kitten. Alternatively, you can launch the Messages app, select any ongoing chat, and click the “+” icon to the left of the text field. Then, tap on “Image Playground.” By pressing the “+” icon next to the “Describe an image” field, you will have the opportunity to either select an existing photo from your library or capture a new picture. Apple also provides a selection of generic images of people that you can choose from.

You can choose between Animation and Illustration styles for your images. The Animation style resembles a cartoonish depiction, while the Illustration style presents an image akin to traditional book illustrations. At present, my experience with the Image Playground has not left me particularly impressed. Though I recognize its utility, especially when needing illustrations for reports, the potential for future features like sketch-style images excites me. For now, the Genmoji feature stands out, providing hours of entertainment as users unleash their creativity in crafting and sharing custom emojis.
