Exceptional flowering of the titan arum at the Meise Botanical Garden: 255 centimeters, a record

The “fleur” of the titan arum began to open this Saturday at the Meise Botanical Garden, the latter announced in a press release.

An even more exceptional flowering this year because the flower measures 255 cm, more than the 237 cm of the previous record, which dates back to 2016. This is the 16th flowering of arum titan at the Meise Botanical Garden.

The arum titan is a rare and endemic species of the tropical forests of Sumatra which presents the largest inflorescence in the world.

Flowering of titan arum lasts regarding 48 hours. A visual spectacle, of course, but also an olfactory one. The plant indeed diffuses a characteristic odor of spoiled meat which allows it to attract pollinating insects.

The flowering of this emblematic species is also an opportunity to draw attention to this endemic and threatened plant of Sumatra whose habitat, the tropical rainforests, are dramatically disappearing due to deforestation.“, underlines the Botanical Garden of Meise, whose access will be extended until 9 p.m. during the two days of flowering, this Saturday and Sunday.
