Excelsior has taken an important step at home against FC Volendam in the fight against relegation. The Rotterdam team won 4-0 and are therefore, at least for a day, in safe fifteenth place in the Premier League. It is the first victory since January for Excelsior.

The match was marred afterwards by a riot, during which two red cards were drawn after the intervention of the VAR. Troy Parrott (Excelsior) was immediately sent off for pulling Safouane Karim (Volendam) by the ear. Karim himself received his second yellow card and therefore also red. Kenzo Goudmijn, who played a good match at Excelsior, was also involved in the disturbance and received a yellow card.

Ranking

Volendam remains stuck in seventeenth place, a position that means direct relegation at the end of the season. The gap with RKC Waalwijk, which is sixteenth, is five points. Coach Regillio Simons’ team approached the match full of positivity, but the problems are now back.

After draws against PEC Zwolle, Almere City and Feyenoord and a win over RKC, Volendam was making a comeback. Due to the hard defeat at Excelsior, the club is actually back to square one. With matches against Sparta Rotterdam, Ajax, FC Twente and Go Ahead Eagles, the remaining program is anything but easy.

The opening minutes of the game were messy. Both teams showed attacking intentions, but no big opportunities were created.

Mühren drops out

After fifteen minutes, Derensili Sanches Fernandes shot the crossbar from a free kick on behalf of Excelsior, a first real warning for Volendam. Things didn’t go well for the visitors, because striker Robert Mühren, club top scorer with eight goals this season, had to leave due to an injury.

The next chances were for Lazaros Lamprou and Arthur Zagré. Volendam keeper Mio Backhaus was in the right place twice. It was a phase in which Excelsior looked much stronger than Volendam.

Check out the reactions after the match here:

In the 41st minute it was Lance Duijvestijn who gave Excelsior the lead with a shot over the ground from the edge of the sixteen. A deserved goal for the Rotterdam team, who were better throughout the first half and continued to get opportunities.

The second goal came two minutes later. Lamprou was able to shoot the ball in from close range after Parrott had extended Julian Baas’ corner. It was one-way traffic and alarm phase 1 at Volendam, which had to give everything in injury time not to concede another goal.

Demolition work

Those goals came in the second half. The chances kept coming for Excelsior and Parrott quickly made it 3-0. Volendam was on the slaughterhouse and after three quarters of the match Lamprou signed for his second, after a cross from Mimeirhel Benita.

After a number of opportunities for Excelsior, Volendam continued in the final phase. It was in vain, the 4-0 remained.
