Excellent Viennese string sound at the Attersee

The visitors had hardly taken their seats in the idyllic mountain church in Steinbach am Attersee – some had previously visited the grave of Friedrich Gulda (1930-2000) in the local cemetery – they already thought they were at the New Year’s concert in the Musikvereinssaal. The Vienna Philharmonia Ensemble with its artistic director Prof. Peter Wächter (1st violin), Kora Lemberg (2nd violin), Martin Lemberg (viola/viola) and Manfred Hecking (double bass) lived up to their name and enchanted with melodies that lived up to Peter Wächter’s initial promise: to conjure up a smile on the faces of visitors.

The Biedermeier bouquet of melodies began with the rousing Woodruff Overture, continued with Philipp Fahrbach father’s “Funny Jumps”, Joseph Lanner’s “Regata-Galopp” and Johann Strauss father’s “Eisenbahn-Lust-Walzer” and “Cachucha-Galopp” as well as Joseph Lanner’s “Werber -Waltz” continued at a brisk pace before Johann Strauss the Father prepared for the drink during the break with the “Champagne Waltz”.

Franz von Suppé, the founder of the Viennese operetta, introduced the second part with the overture from “Poet and Peasant” (with an ingratiating viola solo), which Johann Strauss the Younger introduced with “Lob der Frauen”, the “Gitana-Galopp” and the “pizzicato polka” particularly influenced. In doing so, that fast-paced, dance-encouraging interpretation of which Johann Strauss the Younger once said that one must feel the “Heberte” in his works, that which lifts you out of the chair, would have been successful. In the sacred space, however, noble composure was required!

Perhaps Josef Strauss father’s “My CV is love and desire” corresponded more to that of the vacationing visitors than those far away from the summery Attersee. But it was a high point in the cleverly and entertainingly designed program, which Peter Wächter led with humor and passion. The “Jubel-Csárdás” by Philipp Fahrbach Sohn finally also corresponded to the atmosphere under the ribbed vault of the late Gothic sacred building, before the musical journey through time ended in an effective tonal interpretation of Johann Strauss the Father’s “Alpenkönig-Galopp”.

With two enthusiastically demanded encores, the ensemble let the grateful listeners into the weekend with verve – and to have kept the initial promise.

A special encore was probably the message from the chairman of the “Friends of the Summer Concerts”, RR Franz Kneißl, announcing that the Philharmonic will also be playing music in the pretty village church in 2024.

Conclusion: Entertaining summer evening on a musically and artistically high level, which made the world completely forget.
