Excellent news about the green card for legal residence in the United States

New facilities are being announced for those who are about to obtain their green card in the United States.

Permanent residents whose permits are about to expire have received some positive news. As of September 10, 2024, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has implemented important changes for applicants for Form I-90, used to replace the permanent resident card.

Extension of the validity of the green card

USCIS has announced that for those who properly file Form I-90, the validity of their green card will be automatically extended for 36 months. This benefit applies to both expired and expiring cards, and the extension begins from the expiration date printed on the card.

Replacement of the 24-month period

Previously, permanent residents received a 24-month extension while waiting for their card to be renewed. With this new update, USCIS is extending the deadline to 36 months, which will provide applicants with more time to continue their activities without interruption.

Beginning September 10, USCIS has begun sending amended receipt notices to those with an outstanding Form I-90. These notices can be submitted along with the expired card as proof of the resident’s legal status and employment authorization while the new green card is being processed.

Additional benefits for applicants

The new 36-month extension is intended to mitigate longer wait times for applicants. While waiting for their replacement card, permanent residents will have valid proof of their legal status. Should they need additional evidence of their residency, they can schedule an appointment at a local USCIS office to obtain an ADIT Stamp.

This stamp acts as temporary proof of residency while the renewal process is underway. To obtain it, applicants must contact the USCIS Contact Center after submitting their Form I-90. These changes are intended to streamline the process and reduce uncertainty for those waiting for their new green card.
