In Belgium, there are only 5% of women prisoners, drowned in a very masculine prison world. So few that studies miss their reality, denounces Ecolo-Groen. Article reserved for subscribers By Laurence Wauters Published on 6/08/2023 at 14:38 Reading time: 2 min
What is the situation of female prisoners in Belgium? They are very few in number since they constitute only 4 to 5% of the prison population (recent figures suggest a number of 487 women for 10,896 men in our country). This minority would result in their invisibilization, and an Ecolo-Groen motion for a resolution, tabled by the federal deputies Claire Hugon and Stefaan Van Hecke, draws up an initial general inventory of the prison situation for women, calling for in-depth research on the question. Two studies, one signed by the non-profit organization I.Care giving prisoners a voice and another by prison law specialist Olivia Nederlandt, have just been released. They show how detention can be experienced differently depending on whether you are a man or a woman.
