The Warriors still have not finalized their roster and they are examining a few free agents still without a contract. Stanley Johnson, Will Barton, Derrick Favors and Jaylen Nowell were tried out by the Dubs.
Like a few weeks ago, the Warriors continue to test veterans. Objective for some: to scrape one of the last places on Steve Kerr’s roster. Objective for others: find a good profile at a lower cost who can fit with the existing players and fill certain gaps in the squad. Now for the candidates.
Derrick Favors is a well-known name in the NBA since his time with the Jazz. Out of sight since his departure from Salt Lake City, Rudy Gobert’s former teammate did not appear once on an NBA court last year. At 32, he could still be useful in the paint, and his experience in the Playoffs is interesting for a team that is only aiming for the title.
Will Barton is also looking for a rebound. Just a year ago, he was having fun in the Rockies with Nikola Jokic and company. He has since been sacrificed to bring in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope from Washington. Barton’s Wizards experience ended with him being put on the shelf followed by a short and discreet stint with the Raptors. He nonetheless remains a very decent scorer and he could bring points off the bench behind Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins on the wings.
The wings are also Stanley Johnson’s position. The former Pistons protégé continues his tour of the US. After the Lakers last year, it was the Spurs who tried it this year without following up. Versatile, able to occupy positions 3 and 4, he would bring his defensive qualities.
Finally, Jaylen Nowell was released by the Wolves at the end of his rookie contract. With an average of 11 points coming off the bench in just 19 minutes on the floor, Nowell proved that he could play a match with the substitutes. The problem is that the 23-year-old is quite irregular and he is especially very disappointing in defense. The days when it doesn’t come into attack, it quickly becomes problematic.
