“Ex-wife of Kazakhstan’s former President’s Nephew Sentenced to 7 Years for Kidnapping”

A court in Astana found Gulmira Satybaldy, the ex-wife of Nursultan Nazarbayev, the nephew of ex-president of Kazakhstan, guilty of kidnapping. She was sentenced to seven years in prison. Kazinform.

Gulmira Satybaldy was found guilty of organizing a criminal offense (Art. 28 part 3 of the Criminal Code of Kazakhstan) and kidnapping a person by a group of persons with the use of violence or with the threat of its use (Art. 125 part 1.8). The President of Kazakhstan will be presented with a proposal to deprive Satybaldy of the state award – the Order of “Kurmet”. They are awarded for merits in the development of the economy, social sphere, science and culture, education and other areas.

Other defendants in the case – the driver of Satybaldy Madi Batyrshaev and the perpetrator of the kidnapping Rashid Utebekov were sentenced to seven and five years in prison, respectively. The victims in the case were businessmen Tursen Alaguzov and Aigul Mekesheva.

Gulmira Satybaldy is the ex-wife of Nursultan Nazarbayev’s nephew Kairat Satybaldy. He was included in the Forbes Kazakhstan list of the most influential businessmen in the country. In September, the businessman received ten years in prison in the case of abuse of power and embezzlement of Kazakhtelecom’s funds.
