Former ÖVP Minister Marilies Flemming died at the age of 89. This was confirmed by her party on Thursday. Flemming was Minister for the Environment, Youth and Family from 1987 to 1991. She was also a member of the European Parliament from 1996 to 2004. From ÖVP club chairman August Wöginger to senior citizen Ingrid Korosec, many ÖVP politicians regretted the loss.
“With Marilies Flemming we are losing a courageous fighter and a strong woman and politician,” said Wöginger, concerned regarding Flemming’s death. As Federal Minister for the Environment, Youth and Family, she was committed to family and environmental issues and pushed numerous initiatives and laws in this area. “Unwavering, assertive and demanding, she was also a loud voice for women’s rights and equal opportunities and for a common Europe,” said Wöginger.
“With her death, we are losing a highly valued member of our family who is irreplaceable,” said Ingrid Korosec, President of the Austrian Seniors’ Association, where Flemming had been deputy chairwoman since 1995. The state party chairman of the Vienna People’s Party, Karl Mahrer, was also “deeply dismayed”. Flemming was a member of the Vienna State Parliament from 1973 to 1987.
“With Marilies Flemming we are losing a real pioneer for environmental interests and women’s concerns,” wrote Lower Austria’s governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP). As a strong personality in federal politics, the former minister is a role model for many women who want to get involved in politics. In particular, her commitment once morest nuclear power in Austria will be remembered, said Mikl-Leitner.
The Austrian Women’s Ring, whose former chair was Flemming, also mourned the politician’s death.
