Ex-cop sentenced to more than 20 years in prison

The former US police officer who was guilty of killing George Floyd, an African American, has been sentenced to 21 years in prison. Derek Shaw was convicted by the court for violating Floyd’s civil rights. The outrage sparked by the release of a video of Floyd being choked by a police officer has grown into a national movement against racism in the US.

Floyd was killed on May 25, 2020. Chauvin pushed Floyd to the ground after accusing him of using fake dollars to buy cigarettes. Then he pressed his neck hard with his knees. According to the autopsy report, Shove’s knees were on Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds. Floyd’s last cry, ‘I’m suffocating’, was the slogan of protests across the US.

Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter and sentenced to 22.5 years in prison. This punishment is being served. Meanwhile, the new verdict. Meanwhile, US District Judge Paul Magnuson strongly condemned Shove’s actions. Earlier this year, Magnuson presided over the federal trial and sentencing of three other officers, Jay Alexander Keung, Tau Tao and Thomas Lane.
