Ewa Szykulska: A Life Unfolding Through Love and Autonomy

Ewa Szykulska used to delight men and make women jealous. Today she is 75 years old, and although she has not left the stage yet, she has understood that the peak of her career has long passed. This is her life.

Ewa Szykulska is coming to terms with the passage of time

Ewa Szykulska has been through a lot in recent years: she buried her husband and sister and is trying to rebuild her life. However, she is aware that her strength and possibilities are much more limited today. “At some point, we realize that this is old age. At first, we defend ourselves against it. […] Today I smile and don’t say, “Oh no, it’s not necessary,” but I take help if I really need it. I’m getting used to it. For years I have been taming my own fading. I do not grieve over it, I do not cry, I do not complain, I just state that it is so and bye” she said in an interview with Iza Komendołowicz from PAP Life.

When asked how she copes with life, she replied: “Rather poorly. But I have friends who visit me, help me and it’s great. However, there is no one to cuddle up to, there is a lack of touch, snuggling up to my husband’s beloved gray head,” she admitted. The actress’s husband, Zbigniew Pernej, died in 2021. Since then, the artist has been alone, and although she misses her beloved, she says that over the years she has somehow gotten used to loneliness: “It’s hard for me to live alone, but not because I’m bored with myself. I have never been bothered by the solitude of two people or the silence of two people, if that happened. I have been talking to myself for decades now” she admitted.

Ewa Szykulska quit smoking after her husband’s death

The actress lost her beloved husband in 2021. “On Thursday, December 23, we went for a walk with our dog. My husband bought me flowers for my upcoming name day. On Christmas Eve, he had a very extensive heart attack, it was not Covid-related. He died before dawn on Christmas Day. His heart fell asleep,” she confessed in an interview with “What a week.”

Death separated them after 44 years together. The actress had great difficulty coming to terms with the painful loss. As she admitted, despair made her give herself even more to her addiction: cigarettes. “I smoked and smoked and smoked even after my husband left. It really wasn’t fun, I was already one big cigarette. I honestly admit that when my health started to fail and I stopped breathing, I got really scared that these cigarettes would finally kill me. I had a talk with myself and it was obvious that I was destroying myself in a horrible way, so I gave up smoking for fuck’s sake. I carry an untouched pack of cigarettes in my purse,” she told PAP Life.

This is what Ewa Szykulska’s life looks like today

In the same interview, the actress talked about her life. She admitted that not much has changed over the years: only the time it takes her to perform all the activities has increased. “I do everything to move, in the literal sense too. I work in bursts. I’ve done it my whole life. I’ve always worked until I dropped, then rested. Another thing – and this is what is annoying in this old age, is that now the same activities require much more time, from taking a shower to putting on shoes, taking out the car, to the happy moment when you can finally sit on a chair in a café,” she said.

She also admitted that she tries to live in the moment and does not make plans for the future. “I don’t have dreams of playing my dream role. I rather knew what I didn’t want to play. Saying no is not that easy. All of this is more complicated than it seems to us,” we read. However, she does not want to give up what she loves most: acting. “The stage is magic, it triggers some kind of fifth gear in a person and until the curtain falls, somehow with a superhuman effort, a person endures everything. I wonder, I don’t know yet what I will do. We’ll see – will we see each other again? And would the audience want to see me?” she asked Iza Komendołowicz rhetorically.
