Former Bolivian President Evo Morales claimed to have survived an alleged assassination attempt when unknown individuals shot at his vehicle while he was on his way to a radio program. According to Morales, the hooded attackers opened fire on his car, although he was unharmed.

The former president, who is in the midst of political tensions with current President Luis Arce, indicated that he suspects that this attack was orchestrated by the government. However, the authorities have suggested that it could be a “self-attack.” The incident occurs in a context of protests by Morales’ supporters, who have blocked roads in rejection of a court order that forces him to respond to criminal charges.

Morales reported that the attackers fired at least 14 shots without being able to hit him. His collaborators shared images of the car, which showed bullet holes in the windshield and body, as well as one of its drivers with a bleeding wound. He also mentioned the presence of helicopters flying over the area.

From the Chapare region, where he has remained sheltered, Morales accused Arce of having ordered the attack. “Lucho Arce is going to become the worst president in history. Putting a bullet in a former president is already the last straw,” he said. Morales is at the center of a conflict for control of the ruling party, the Movement towards Socialism (MAS), ahead of the 2025 presidential elections.

In response to the complaints, the Vice Minister of Citizen Security, Roberto Ríos, stated that there are indications of a possible self-attack and that an investigation will be carried out. Ríos accused Morales of seeking confrontation and violence on the roads for political interests.

Political tension intensifies, as the situation is complicated by road closures that have generated shortages in the cities, exacerbating social discontent in the midst of an economic crisis.
