Peace.-The former president of Bolivia Evo Morales (2006-2019) said that if the justice system wants to put him in jail “let them do it”, in reference to the controversial “terrorism case” that occurred in 2009, following the Prosecutor’s Office appointed a commission to investigate whether Extrajudicial executions and torture were committed in that police operation.
The “terrorism case” broke out on April 16, 2009, with a police operation at the Las Américas Hotel in the city of Santa Cruz, which left three foreigners dead.
Likewise, the Croatian-Bolivian Mario Tadic and the Hungarian Elöd Tóásó were arrested, accused of being part of a terrorist cell that supposedly sought the secession of the Santa Cruz region, the country’s economic engine, and of attacking the then-president Morales.
“If they want to put me in jail for defending the unity of our country in the face of the separatist threat, financed by the land-owning oligarchy, let them do it,” Morales wrote on his X social network account.
This Saturday, Tóásó and Tadic, who also served a sentence for this case, published a statement on their social networks reporting that an investigation was opened in the sixth Criminal Investigation Court in Santa Cruz.
“We ask citizens to collaborate with the victims in the investigation of the Prosecutor’s Office by providing evidence (published or unpublished), statements, testimonies to reach the truth regarding the intellectual and material authors of these cruel and reckless acts,” says part of the release.
On April 11, the deadline for the recommendations given in 2022 by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to the Bolivian State to carry out a “criminal investigation” to “clarify the facts completely, identify all possible responsibilities” expired. and impose the appropriate sanctions.”
The IACHR report also noted that there was an “international responsibility” of the Bolivian State for the “extrajudicial execution, torture and illegal detention” once morest Tadic, Tóásó and the Bolivians Juan Guedes and Alcides Mendoza.
Morales had already warned this Sunday during his program on the coca radio station Kawsahchun Coca that he will not testify in this case even if they “put him in jail.”
“We have defended the integrity of the national territory. He has defended himself with the Police, although that day I was outside of Bolivia,” he said.
For his part, the State Attorney, César Siles, stated that this week will be “crucial” since the IACHR will respond if it accepts Bolivia’s report on compliance with the recommendations or if it passes the case to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ( Court (IDH).
The case was closed in 2020 with the acquittal of all the accused, when the Government of former interim president Jeanine Áñez (2019-2020) and the Prosecutor’s Office withdrew the accusations.
A few years ago, Morales requested the opening of the controversial case following considering that the process was “arbitrarily” archived by the Áñez Government.Infobae.
