In autumn, like every year, there is a switch from summer time to winter time. When will the change take place? The most important information at a glance.

Munich – When autumn begins in Germany, an alarm bell automatically rings in many people’s heads: the time change from summer time to winter time is imminent. Anyone who is unsure whether the dial will be turned this weekend can sit back and relax for now. Although October is the right month, there is still some time left.

This October, like every year, the clocks will be reset to winter time. This means that in one night the clocks are suddenly set back one hour from 3 a.m. to 2 a.m. Late risers in particular will enjoy the time change. In winter it makes it possible to sleep an hour longer without losing any time.

Time change in October: On which day does the hand turn to winter time?

On modern devices, the time change happens automatically; there is a special technology behind it. Smartphones, laptops, tablets and all radio-controlled clocks in particular automatically adapt to winter time. This means that all alarm clock settings can remain the same in the morning and cannot be changed unnecessarily or woken up at night. Only those who have an analog wristwatch or wall clock or radio alarm clocks that do not receive a radio signal, for example, have to turn the pointer by hand. The latter in particular are very old specimens. In most households you can probably find clocks with a radio signal.

Although we are already in the middle of October, there is still time until the time change: it still takes a total of two weeks until the change to winter time takes place. Summer time ends in Germany and most European countries on the last Sunday in October. Specifically, the clocks will be changed on the night of Saturday, October 28th to Sunday, October 29th.

Switching to winter time: With this memory aid, the time change works without much confusion

Anyone who regularly has problems with the time change and cannot remember which direction the time changes in summer and winter can help with a simple memory aid. A well-known saying goes: “In summer the furniture is presented on the terrace, in winter it is put back”. Anyone who replaces the word “furniture” with “pointer” has the answer immediately.

Meanwhile, there is always a lot of debate regarding summer and winter time in Europe. Although discussions have already taken place regarding a possible abolition of the time change, there is disagreement in the various countries as to which time should prevail. While some European countries prefer standard time, i.e. winter time, others are once more in favor of implementing summer time. However, a confusing patchwork of different time zones in Europe must be avoided at all costs. Therefore, the traditional time change currently remains. (nz)
