Prepare Pneumonia A very serious disease that can cause life-threatening complications, it is a lung condition where the lungs are affected in such a way that a person experiences shortness of breath and other complications. It leads to inflammation of the air sacs in one or both lungs, and then causes fluid or pus to become trapped in the sputum. Pneumonia can cause a person to have fever, chills, and difficulty breathing in the initial cases. This may happen during hospitalization and is much more serious. Below are the diagnostic methods and treatment options available for pneumonia onlymyhealth
Diagnosis of pneumonia
One of the initial steps the doctor takes is to ask some pertinent questions regarding the patient’s medical history. He or she may even listen to your lungs with a stethoscope to check for abnormal bubbling or crackling sounds. Your doctor will require you to perform the following tests for diagnosis.
blood test
1- Blood Test – It is a general test that is done to confirm infection and to determine if there is some type of organism that is causing the infection. But an exact indication is not possible through a blood test. But this can confirm the presence of pneumonia in the body.
2 – . Chest X-ray – This is an important step as it helps in diagnosing whether the pneumonia has affected the patient severely or if it is a mild infection. It is also helpful to know where the infection occurred. You may tell your doctor what type of germ is causing the pneumonia.
3 – Pulse oximetry- It is useful for measuring oxygen levels in the blood. It can also help prevent your lungs from absorbing enough oxygen into your main bloodstream.
4- Sputum test- In this test a sample of fluid is taken from your lungs. You may be asked to cough deeply and analyzed to help understand the cause of the pneumonia infection in the lungs.
In case you are over the age of 65, the doctor will also ask you to undergo some tests which may include the following:
1- CT Scan- If the pneumonia in your body does not turn out as you would like it to be, it may be due to the CT scan. This helps get a more detailed picture of the lungs.
2 – Pleural fluid transplantation – This is a procedure in which a needle is guided between the ribs from the pleural region to analyze and identify infection.
How can pneumonia be treated?
You can only treat pneumonia by eliminating or eliminating the symptoms causing the infection. Once complications are prevented, the patient is put back into recovery with the help of medications and treatments. You will have to stay in bed following getting pneumonia for proper recovery.
1- Antibiotics – The use of antibiotics is the primary treatment option considered for clearing bacterial pneumonia. It takes time to identify the type of bacteria causing pneumonia, and then the best antibiotics are used to treat the symptoms.
2 – . Cough medicines – One of the main effects of pneumonia is that you cough a lot. Cough medicines are helpful in breaking up fluid in the lungs, not eliminating it completely. Very few over-the-counter medications are helpful for reducing coughing problems caused by pneumonia. If you are a cough suppressant, the lowest dose will be used.
3 – Fever Pain relievers – The doctor may advise you to take fever-reducing pills or pain relievers in addition to other medicines in order to provide relief. These medications containing aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen are helpful in this process.
