Taxpayers who overpaid taxes last year will begin receiving refunds from Wednesday. Last year, no fewer than 15 million taxpayers were affected, receiving a total of 13 billion euros.

In the next few days you must remember to check your bank account. Every year some taxpayers get a surprise by getting a refund of the taxes they overpaid in the previous year. According to Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire, the lucky ones will receive their money this Wednesday. And it will be a lot.

Average EUR 850 per household

Last year, no less than 15 million taxpayers were affected. Withholding tax is too high. “The calculation of withholding tax means that you receive a little more than the actual income tax. It does not take into account certain costs or expenses, such as professional fees, deductions and Pinel investment type tax credits or personal services taxation departments, which return the ‘overpayment’ to you the following year, which is quite logical”, explains Florent Belon, head of Olifan Engineering Heritage.

A refund may also be granted if the family’s circumstances change during the year. For example, in the case of retirement or the birth of a child, if the change is not announced immediately, the government will not adjust the withholding tax rate and will therefore collect more than she requested. Last year, the 15 million households affected received a total of 13 billion euros, or an average of nearly 850 euros per household.
