Everything you need to know about Once Human, the new F2P paranormal game that’s a hit on Steam

The apocalypse has taken place. The Earth itself has been transformed and mutated by the effects of space dust. Among the ruins, a small group of humans have acquired superhuman abilities and the ability to survive in the new environment as meta-humans. We are still on Earth, but it is no longer Earth: it is a new world to shape, one full of secrets and mysteries where we can leave our mark. That is the premise of Once Human, a paranormal F2P survival game that has landed on Steam with notable success, in line with the insatiable hunger that exists on Valve’s platform for survival games. In addition, Once Human proposes a different approach, placing the action in a scenario where the everyday and the paranormal go hand in hand, with traces of games like Control or imagined universes like the one linked to the SCP Foundation.

The paranormal setting, the different planes of existence and the strange creatures are combined with elements typical of the genre: resource gathering, base building, crafting, looting and both cooperative and PVP elements within a huge map with several servers spread throughout the world. Everything is linked by a story full of attractive elements, sprinkled with numerous secondary missions, within a progression that takes us from one area of the map to another, fighting with powerful entities within Monoliths, spectacular battles once morest “final bosses” that mark the most obvious obstacles in terms of progression.

A complicated launch

Although the global launch and its arrival on Steam has been received with a mixed rating right now (55% positive out of 3645), the truth is that many of those negative reviews are due to elements that were quickly fixed or are on the way to being fixed. The game, which has been self-published, has opted from the start to limit players to a single character, without the ability to change servers. This has created huge queues and a lot of frustration at the impossibility of sharing the world with friends. The team has acted quickly in response to the wave of complaints and has opened the possibility of creating multiple characters so that players can search for the right server, either by population or because they have acquaintances there. The response to the quick announcement has been positive and describes a team focused on making their project a success.

Once Human has a few more issues, and a few accusations that seem unfounded. It has been accused of P2W, but there is no basis for that. It has a feature called the Wish Machine that functions as a sort of gacha for getting rare weapons, but it runs on in-game resources, so there is no element of a paid advantage. The microtransactions are strictly cosmetic in nature, so there is no competitive advantage at this time. It also doesn’t support Steam Deck, it doesn’t even offer pad support right now, and it’s a game with demanding technical requirements.

With its supernatural setting, its large map that can be explored by vehicle and even by gliding through the air, and the many possibilities it offers, Once Human is presented as a unique bet in a genre as competitive as survival, which also seems to have a good base. The most difficult thing regarding these games is to get a stable user base once the initial launch is over, but Starry Studio’s game has enough elements to make its own space.
