Everything gone except Surface: Microsoft discontinues its own PC peripherals

Microsoft stops selling all peripherals that are simply marketed under the Microsoft brand and not as a Surface. Thus, the company discontinues almost all keyboards and mice, but also products like the Modern Webcam. Existing stocks are being sold off.

The future focus will be on the Surface brand, like Microsoft’s Senior Communications Manager Dan Laycock confirmed to The Verge: “In the future, we will focus on our Windows PC accessories portfolio under the Surface brand. We will continue to offer a range of Surface-branded PC accessories – including mice, keyboards, pens, docks, accessibility accessories and more. Existing PC Microsoft-branded accessories such as mice, keyboards and webcams will continue to be sold in existing markets at existing retail prices while supplies last.”

There are currently eleven keyboards with a German key layout from Microsoft in local stores; only two of them belong to the Surface family. The Surface Ergonomic Keyboard (from €84.99) is a more unusual variant of the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard (from €43.99), for example with a felt-covered palm rest. The Surface variant costs almost 90 percent more. It can be assumed that Microsoft will generally concentrate on high-margin premium devices with the reorientation.

So far, there is no universal webcam under the Surface banner – the Surface Hub 2 Camera (from €185.90) with its connection is only intended for Microsoft’s conference systems and not for mounting on a monitor. Either the company will present new products in the next few months or the range will be thinned out. Microsoft has not commented on the product plans within the conversion.
