“Everything for my mother” from the Film Club of Patras

With the film “All about my mother” by Pedro Almodovar, the Film Club of Patras continues on Monday, October 21 at Option Cinemas in Veso Mare at 7 pm and 9.30 pm.

Manuela is a 40-year-old nurse, who specializes as a mediator in special transplant centers. She is the one who convinces the relatives, at the time of their great tragedy, to donate their human organs to someone else in need. But she ignores her own tragic karma. On his birthday, Esteban, her 17-year-old son, will be hit by a car in front of her. A romantic, a dreamer and a budding artist, he was trying to get an autograph from the great theater artist Huma Rojo, and he didn’t notice while running down the street. Manuela will donate his heart and lose hers.
Devastated, she decides to leave Madrid. To return to the Barcelona of her youth, when she too played Stella in the theater of “The Lust Bus”. And when Kowalski was played by Esteban’s father – before he abandoned them, changed his life, changed his gender and became “Lola”. Manuela will look to find him through their old friend Agrado, an outspoken transgender woman. At the same time, he will get to know the diva Huma Rojo up close, but he will also connect with Rosa, a young nun who experiences her own tragedy.
Almodovar was introduced to us as a director fresh, postmodern, distinct, daring who advanced his cinema by leaps and bounds. And his cinema has always been a cinema of magical contrasts. A valuable queer cinema that unites the tragic with the funny, the melodrama with the camp, the noir with the surreal absurd. But never, until this film, had the Spanish director stepped with such confidence on his feet. Here for the first time he united all the contrasts of his style, all the themes of his reflections, all the dots of his personal and professional path in a complete masterpiece. And together, it united all of us – gays, lesbians, non-binary, straight – in a common place of humanity and emotion.
