“Every year we have to lower our prices, this must stop”: this pharmaceutical group is asking for stability in prices to maintain its factory in Sophia Antipolis

Pragmatism. When it comes to talking regarding business the Danish way, we don’t beat around the bush. In any case, this is the message to remember from the visit to the Lundbeck factory in Sophia Antipolis by Christophe Parisot, French Ambassador to Denmark and Michael Starbaek Christensen, his Scandinavian counterpart. In the face of praise for “managerial qualities” and humanism attributed to our northern neighbours, the Danish diplomat recalls the notion of “profitability” that his nation keeps pegged to the body.

With a global turnover of 2.4 billion euros in 2022, the pharmaceutical company is established in more than fifty countries. And since 2009 in the Alpes-Maritimes where 85 Me have been invested. Specializing in diseases of the central system (Parkinson, depression and Alzheimer’s) and preventive treatment for migraine, the Sophia medicine production site employs 220 people. A niche that clearly has potential according to the projections presented by the director Vincent Mermet-Lyaudoz who wants to continue in performance, especially on the packaging lines: “We produce 147 million blisters (1) per year here, or 75% of the group.”

“Bringing innovations to market”

But this climb does not seem to be a long calm river. Witness Lourdes Pla, Managing Director Lundbeck France and Benelux, who took advantage of the presence of the representatives of the State (2) to make the difficulties that the group encounters heard: “In France, drug prices are the lowest in all of Europe. Every year we have to lower our prices.” For example, Seroplex – an antidepressant – experienced a reduction of -17% on its price in 2022. A situation of decline that is taking hold. To the great displeasure of Lourdes Pla who would like visibility: “What we are asking for is above all price stability. But also to facilitate the possibility of bringing innovations to market” – who today remain on the doorstep of France, there also for financial matters.

A wish which, if not granted, might jeopardize the sustainability of the Sophia Antipolis site? “In the long term, it can have an impact on investments, that’s for sure.”

1. They contain seven to fourteen tablets. 2. The mayor of Antibes Jean Leonetti, the mayor of Valbonne Joseph Cesaro and the deputy for the 7th constituency Éric Pauget, were also present.
